There are sandy beaches, pebbly beaches and places where you can just swim off the rocks.
The nearest beaches can be reached in just over 30 minutes at Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia and Clambrone. Like most beaches in Italy the above beaches are mainly organised meaning they have sunloungers, sun umbrellas, bathrooms, showers, possibly a bar or restaurant and more importantly a lifeguard.
There are also what is known as free beaches (Spiaggie Libere) where you just turn up with your towel and sun cream!
If you like your beaches un-organised and natural then Marina di Vecchiano is the perfect destination and can be reached in approximately 45 minutes. Vecchiano is also part of the Monte Pisano.
The 4 km stretch of unspoilt free beach is set in the beautiful nature reserve of San Rossore Massaciuccoli against a backdrop of mountains topped with what looks like snow but which is actually marble.
Thermal Spas – Day Spas
If the beach is the place to head to in the summer the natural thermal spas with their curative waters make a great excursion in the cooler months.
Apart from taking a dip in the balmy waters you can also have a pamper at one of the luxurious spas.
The nearby town of San Giuliano Terme is only 20 minutes away and offers a luxury spa resort housed in a wonderful 17th Century villa.
Visitors to the Day Spa can bathe in the waters and indulge in some treatments.
Cascina Terme can be reached in approximately 45 minutes by driving inland through some lovely Tuscan countryside.
Nestled in the middle of the pretty spa town the Spa itself consists of both indoor and outdoor pools filled with the curative waters naturally heated to 36°C. The outdoor pool incorporates soft waterfalls and massage jets which offer the perfect remedy for any tight spots!
